![]() ![]() Jewish institutions have yet to design much-needed programs and policies to ensure the inclusion of Sephardic and Mizrachi Jews. We know that Sephardic and Mizrachi Jews are occupying greater spaces in organized Jewish life and in Jewish day schools, yet Sephardic and Mizrachi projects, organizations and thought leaders are still underfunded, underutilized and at times tokenized. While Mizrachi and Sephardic Jews were intentionally excluded from the recent Counting Inconsistencies survey conducted by the Jews of Color Field Building Initiative, the results of the study provided useful information affirming that Mizrachi and Sephardic Jews, like Jews of Color, have been vastly undercounted, miscounted and inconsistently included in Jewish demographic studies across the board.īecause so little reliable research has been conducted, JIMENA has relied heavily on anecdotal research, and it’s very likely that Mizrachi and Sephardic Jews, and their descendants, constitute the largest ethnic minority group among American Jews. It’s been incredibly frustrating that we’ve never been able to adequately meet a single request for information, as no empirical data on our communities exists. One of the problems Sephardic and Mizrachi scholars and activists face is a lack of empirical data to help us better understand our communities.įor many years at JIMENA, Jewish foundations and partner organizations have asked us to provide demographic statistics on Sephardic and Mizrachi Jews in North America. While there are North American Mizrachi and Sephardic Jews who identify as Jews of Color, especially among younger generations, it’s safe to assume that a large percentage are functionally white and identify as such. It’s far more common for Mizrachi and Sephardic Jews to identify, collectively and individually, in ethnic terms. Mizrachi and Sephardic Jews are certainly racially diverse, but have rarely defined themselves in racial terms. Within the Jewish community, I’ve observed that the conflation of race and ethnicity and the tendency of Jewish organizations and professionals to socially categorize Sephardic and Mizrachi Jews and non-white Jews together into one binary lump happens often and tends to be problematic in the eyes of many Mizrachi and Sephardic Jewish leaders. ![]() It’s likely that in her mind all Jews who aren’t of Eastern European, Ashkenazi descent are automatically coded as Jews of Color - including Mizrachi and Sephardic Jews. In reflecting back on the meeting, it’s quite clear to me that this professional didn’t fully understand the differences between race and ethnicity. ![]() Halfway through our meeting, she interrupted and said, “So JIMENA is an organization for Jews of Color.” I replied, “JIMENA doesn’t focus on issues of race, but on ensuring the heritage and history of Mizrachi and Sephardic Jews is incorporated into mainstream Jewish life.” She looked at me genuinely confused. When I first started my work at JIMENA: Jews Indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa, an organization committed to advancing and protecting the heritage and histories of Mizrachi and Sephardic Jews, I had the opportunity to sit with a prominent member of the Bay Area Jewish community and introduce her to our work. ![]() Though the graphics could be pixeliciously rough, they still added a considerable degree of detail to the wide, open world of Betrayal’s section-by-section sandbox as players cleared each major chapter in the main story.ĭrakkhen, a CRPG which came out in Japan in 1989, did relatively the same thing mechanically sans the digitized actors. Players would see Midkemia from first-person and a combination of digitized likenesses from actors’ faces to costumed, full-body scans added details where it was needed in the text-filled dialogues, cuts, all the way down to the character status screens for each one. The use of 3D was on the rise as the technology began pulling more detail out of the crude, flat polys and wireframes that used to define it on earlier PC games. This was the slimmed down ad that also ran in 1993 for the game, this time showing off the actual box cover with a healthy amount of easier-to-read text. ![]() ![]() But in Betrayal, a new threat endangers the fragile peace earned in the years afterward, and it’s going to be up to the player and a party of hardy adventurers to save the day.īetrayal at Krondor did a number of things that made it stand out from the typical, grid-based CRPG at the time from its mechanics to the way players would see its world from the user interface that resembled something straight out of fantasy to the world outside of it. On Midkemia during the Riftwar, an orphan rose up to become a Master Magician as he and his friends eventually saved the world from catastrophe. Connected to Midkemia is another world, Kelewan, through magical rifts. The Riftwar series took place in the fantasy world of Midkemia, a medieval place ruled over by both sorcery and steel. The game takes place ten years after the last Riftwar book, A Darkness at Sethanon, and before Prince of the Blood featuring a number of characters from the books along with a host of locations allowing players to explore them from a much closer perspective. Though Feist didn’t write the story or create the characters in it, however, he did have the final word in making sure that it didn’t do anything too far off the beaten path. It’s an original tale written by designers at Dynamix that eventually became a part of Feist’s universe when it was followed up by its own novelization and sequel books. One of the things they had also dabbled in was CRPGs and, under Sierra, their creativity would become Betrayal at Krondor. Although they are probably not as well known as an Activision or EA, they were one of the giants among PC gamers in the late eighties and early nineties thanks to the avalanche of ideas that they produced from their studio. String.lower(str) and string.upper(str) convert the string to lower and uppercase, respectively. String.len(str) returns the length of the string. It additionally supports a new format character %q, which formats a string value in a way that can be read back by Lua, escaping or quoting characters as needed (for example quotes, newlines, etc.). Lua includes the string library to implement common string manipulation functions, including pattern matching. Patterns, just like regular expressions, are commonly used for string manipulation, using primarily functions from the string library. Unfortunately these are not included in Lua, so you would need to install them on your own. If you encounter something that really cannot be done, you can always resort to libraries like Lrexlib, which provide interfaces to real regex libraries. For example %d for digits, %s for spaces, %w for alphanumeric characters.įor most common use cases, Lua patterns are enough, you just have to be aware of their differences. Most character classes are represented by the same characters, but preceded by ampersand. The escape character is the ampersand ( %) instead of the backslash ( \). match the shortest possible string instead of the longest one) of the previous character, unlike in regexes, in which it’s commonly indicate by a question mark following the corresponding * or + The regex. The asterisk ( *), plus sign ( +) and question mark ( ?) represent “zero or more”, “one or more” and “one or none” of the previous character, just like in regexes. ) represents any character, just like in regexes. The following are some differences and similarities you need to be aware of when using patterns: They are used by many functions in the string library like string.find() and string.match(). Lua has patterns, which fulfill many of the same functions but have a different syntax and some limitations. If you are familiar with regular expressions, you know how powerful they are for examining and manipulating strings in any programming language. hs.distributednotifications), this technique can be useful. These are plastic waste streams which don’t fit into existing loops like recycling programs and are on their way either to landfill or incineration either due to the kind of plastic, the material combination or the insufficient quantity for starting a dedicated program. Becoming more sustainable can only happen if this is also supported from within the company.ĭesign Pataki: How do you treat the waste material out of any new products?Ĭasper Van der Meer: We like the challenges of what we call ‘ Outkast’ plastics. The last step is engaging and inspiring your audience but also the people that work for this company. Our process consists of 4 steps: gaining insight in their current situation of plastic use, getting in control by making a plastic strategy, based on this strategy we put it into practice by sustainable (re)design and engineering. How do you envision what the recycled materials could potentially be?Ĭasper Van der Meer: We help clients to make the switch to sustainable plastics and make them ready for the circular economy for plastics. We spoke to Casper Van der Meer about what they do and achieve with their studio. ![]() ![]() To understand this, one needs to envision its complete life cycle and the one after and so on. They believe that plastic as a material is not used in the right way and holds the potentiality of very versatile material. Working with brands like Unilever, Hema, Pelican Rouge and many more, they have been successful in translating and introducing many of their resources into the loop of circular design. Better Future Factory helps companies switch to more sustainable uses of plastic which in turn initiates them into the circular economy for plastics. An inherent curiosity of plastic as a material coupled with the infuriation at the overflowing plastic waste is what motivated them to start their collective practice. This team of Imagineers, designers and engineers collaborate with companies to recycle plastic materials by turning them into meaningful products. Better Future Factory New Marble Wall Photograph Credit: Better Future Factoryīetter Future Factory is a sustainable design studio based in the Netherlands founded by Laura C Klauss, Casper van der Meer and Bart Bleijerveld. With this strategy looking to shape and challenge the modern lifestyle, we spoke to three studios that endorse, ensure and encourage circular design.ġ. By constantly ensuring that material waste and overused resources are recycled to make more products, circular design aims to turn trash to treasure. However, that still relied on a take – make – waste system, a linear form of manufacturing, which produced tonnes of waste The 3Rs were just a temporary solution to an exponentially growing problem, and the solution to that was not to focus on the consumer but to change the system of manufacturing – make it a closed loop of production. Over the past few decades, the journey to minimise waste and pollution centred on a reduce, reuse, recycle policy. Encouraging a closed loop of production, a circular economy ensures that every bit of material in a manufacturing cycle is repurposed. One of the more observable indicators of this shift has been the increase in the number of design studios that operate within the tenets of a circular economy. Environmental awareness is steadily seeping into our collective subconscious and influencing lifestyles. ![]() Sustainability has long outgrown its place as a mere buzzword.
